Idaho researchers working to keep astronaut water e-coli free 10:29 PM MST on Monday, October 27, 2003 Associated Press Post Falls, Idaho - University of Idaho researchers are designing a computer chip that would keep e.coli out of astronauts' drinking water as it is recycled in space. The Center for Advanced Microelectronics and Biomolecular Research was established last year in Post Falls, and researchers there won a $30,000 grant this year to begin working on a chip that would instantly tell whether recycled waste was free of all e-coli bacteria. Current testing systems take about 24 hours. The Post Falls research team is also doing work for the US Department of Agriculture on food safety, and the Centers for Disease Control on bioterrorism. |
